Through an emissions inventory, Corclima measures Monteverde’s greenhouse gases – finding that transportation, livestock, and cooking gas are the top contributors. At the same time, they track carbon sequestration, measuring tree growth on local farms to calculate how much carbon Monteverde’s forests absorb. Together, these inventories shape the region’s priorities and action plans.
The work is urgent, as climate change affects critical biomes, climates, and habitats around the world. Here in Monteverde, Corclima’s science helps us understand these changes, while their community approach ensures that we can respond together.

Every possible tree on our property was preserved, all wiring was installed underground to protect wildlife corridors, and we sourced sustainably certified Costa Rican wood for our furniture and finishes.

From our rainwater-fed irrigation system and solar-heated water to wastewater treatment using beneficial microorganisms, we minimize impact while maintaining comfort.
Cultivating with Care: Food & Garden
At Ocotea Boutique Hotel, sustainability begins in the soil. Our organic garden provides fresh ingredients for the kitchen, while biodegradable cleaning products and ethical sourcing ensure that what we consume and use reflects our values.
That same care extends to how we manage what’s left behind. We compost whenever possible, turning organic waste into nutrients for our gardens. We separate recyclables from non-recyclables, minimizing what goes to landfill. Gray water is carefully conserved to reduce unnecessary waste, and our team is mindful of water use throughout the hotel.
In short, every detail has been intentional – from hand-painted murals by Costa Rican artists to locally crafted furniture, and from how we source to how we discard. The result is a space that’s as sustainable as it is authentic, where thoughtful choices shape both your stay and our shared environment.
Driving Sustainable Mobility: The Ruta Eléctrica Monteverde
Costa Rica is leading the charge in sustainable travel, and we're so honored to be part of a Monteverde that has become a model for electric mobility in the region.
Launched in 2019, the Ruta Eléctrica Monteverde was the first community-driven initiative of its kind in Costa Rica – and one of the first in Latin America to support electric vehicle travel. It connects charging stations along the main access routes from San José, Jacó, Nosara, Liberia, and La Fortuna, making it easier for travelers to reach Monteverde from the airport – or to/from other destinations around the country.
At Ocotea Boutique Hotel, we are proud to host one of these stations.

Our charging station is listed on the PlugShare app, the largest global community for electric vehicle drivers. Through the app, you can find our station, view photos, read details, track your charges, and leave reviews while interacting with a nationwide community of EV drivers.
If you’re not a guest at our Monteverde boutique hotel, you can enjoy a meal at Nectandra Restaurant (open to the public by reservation) or take in the views from our rooftop terrace while recharging your vehicle – all part of a mindful, responsible travel experience. Our station is currently available from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. by reservation, ensuring convenience and peace of mind for anyone exploring Monteverde.
