According to the U.S. newspaper The Washington Post, “Costa Rica is one of the most versatile vacation spots in the world,” remarking the fantastic diversity of places you can find in our small country.

And as the country has become one of the most fashionable post-pandemic destinations due to its relaxed entry measures, and in this new article written by Natalie B. Compton, the U.S. newspaper recommends seven vacation options for different travel styles.

The article opens with: "Whether you like sandy beaches and rolling hillside farms or misty cloud forests and active volcanoes, there are plenty of options for relaxation and adventure."

And we agree!

From The  Expert Perspective

In researching for this article, Compton asked several experts from the travel industry about the diverse activities and the best places to enjoy them.

The first piece of advice, though, is what anyone who’s been in the country before knows to be true: Don’t stay in only one place. Costa Rica is incredibly diverse, so it’s worth splitting your trip among three or four different spots.

It also recommends getting away from chain hotels and going for the less traveled roads, remarking that when you go for the big brands, the profit will go out from Costa Rica, as opposed to supporting local ones.

The article then lists seven highly recommended destinations in Costa Rica, including none other than our home in Monteverde!

Different Destinations for Diverse Experiences

As we know well here, Monteverde isn’t all that Costa Rica has to offer. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is an option for a wellness retreat, and the Southern part of Costa Rica is an increasing hub for wellness tourism.

The Caribbean and Pacific coastlines are recommended as they have ample options for travelers looking to discover beach destinations.

If food is your thing, San Jose and the fantastic Barrio Escalante are recommended to find all sorts of styles and flavors but also an exclusive and beautiful setting with dozens of options.

The article also dives into the possibility of going into the most remote areas of Costa Rica and tasting the original indigenous communities' flavors.

While Corcovado National Park is the ideal destination for those seeking adventure in nature, for surfers, it recommends Nosara, Malpais, and Santa Teresa.

For those visiting Costa Rica as a family, La Fortuna is a place for all ages with experiences like “chocolate farms, the hot springs, and the Arenal Volcano National Park.”

However, for families, regarding beaches, they recommend Hermosa Beach, where you will find “has calm, swimmable water; and is good for snorkeling.”

And Of Course, Monteverde!

Compton lauds Monteverde’s biodiversity, explaining that

“To see wild animals, head to the misty forest of Monteverde, home to hundreds of species of birds, monkeys, bats, reptiles and amphibians, porcupines and sloths.”

The cloud forests of Monteverde are as beautiful as they are mysterious and when you walk in its trails with open eyes and ears you will find that wildlife is all around, especially if you’re an avid birdwatcher

Though any local Monteverde expert will tell you that the true beauty of our cloud forests lies in the incredible interconnection of thousands of unique plant and animal species. Often, wildlife is a flicker through the trees, a flash through the canopy, a stunning moment of birdsong in a clearing.

So though the article goes on to show the importance of not taking animal selfies, we’d be surprised if anything in Monteverde held still long enough to get a selfie!

We Are Thankful

For us at Ocotea Boutique Hotel, it’s always excellent news to know our country and region are mentioned in highly known and respectable media, such as the Washington Post.

Everyone who lives here puts their heart and soul into making Costa Rica, and Monteverde, wonderful places for life, whether that’s wildlife or human life.

Seeing that recognition means that in some small way, our efforts in peace and the conservation of our breathtaking nature have paid back, and we will always be thankful for those who can value and cherish our gifted and lovable land.
