An Evening at Nectandra

Recently, we were delighted to invite contributing writer Joy Detlor, usually a resident of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, to join us in Monteverde and spend an evening dining with us at Nectandra.  Below, she captures her experience, and we’re happy to be able to share that with the Ocotea audience!

An Evening at Nectandra: A Culinary Delight

Securing a reservation at Nectandra is a coveted opportunity, and with so many glowing reviews online, so when I received an invitation to dine, I was beyond excited. From the moment we arrived, we knew this was a dining experience like no other. Our hostess greeted us with a warm smile that felt authentic and effortless, leading us to a table overlooking lush, moonlit gardens. The open windows allowed the floral notes of the evening breeze and the gentle chirping of insects to set the stage for a magical night.

Their wine menu has been expertly curated to offer a diverse selection that complements a variety of palates while perfectly pairing with their thoughtfully crafted dishes. The drink menu immediately intrigued us with its thoughtfully crafted options, each one a testament to the mixologist's skill and creativity. After consulting our knowledgeable server, who tailored her recommendations to our preferences, we indulged in an espresso martini and a gin and tonic infused with orange and rosemary.

My martini was velvety smooth, rich with the bold essence of Costa Rican dark roast, while my husband’s cocktail was an aromatic revelation, its citrus and herbaceous notes perfectly balanced.

The Essence of Nectandra: Service and Atmosphere

As we settled into the evening, it became clear that Nectandra is more than a restaurant—it’s a sanctuary for the senses. The attentive yet unobtrusive service elevated the entire experience, creating a flow that felt effortless. Our server anticipated our needs with precision, refilling glasses just before we realized they were empty and answering every question about the menu with genuine enthusiasm and expertise.

The setting itself is a vital part of the experience. Nestled within the lush gardens of the Ocotea Hotel, Nectandra feels like an extension of the natural beauty surrounding it. Soft lighting highlights the vibrant greenery, while the sounds of nature just outside the glass—crickets, cicadas, and the occasional distant bird call—infuse the space with tranquility. The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between refined elegance and relaxed charm, making every moment feel special yet unpretentious.

Flavors that Tell a Story

Nectandra’s menu is a testament to the art of balancing the familiar with the adventurous. From reimagined Costa Rican classics to inventive pairings that push culinary boundaries, every dish invites curiosity and excitement—rooted in the vibrant flavors of the region.

As someone who relishes trying new things, I was drawn to the Fig & Tomato Salad, a vibrant medley of sun-ripened local tomatoes, sweet figs, and crisp greens, their freshness heightened by a drizzle of rich balsamic and creamy, tangy goat cheese.

Each bite carried the essence of Monteverde’s fertile landscape, where quality ingredients shine. My husband, ever the traditionalist, opted for the Beef Consommé, its deep, aromatic broth infused with locally sourced herbs that added a layer of warmth and authenticity.

For our mains, we embraced indulgence with two cuts of Wagyu—mine a sauté adorned with succulent, freshly caught shrimp and a demi-glace bursting with umami depth, his short ribs slow-cooked to perfection and brightened by a zesty, herbaceous chimichurri.

The ingredients spoke for themselves—each bite a celebration of this lush, bountiful land, where nature and culinary artistry come together in perfect harmony.

A Sweet Finale

Though thoroughly sated, we couldn’t resist the allure of dessert. The Torrija—Nectandra’s decadent twist on French toast—was a highlight. Delicate brioche soaked in a whisper of caramel, adorned with chocolate drizzle, and crowned with orange gelato, it was a delight of contrasting textures and indulgent flavors.

We lingered over every bite, accompanied by expertly brewed Costa Rican coffee, as we allowed the sense of comfort and satisfaction to sink into us.

We Will Be Back

It is evenings like these that create eternal memories, and when you find a place that satisfies both your need for adventure, and your yen for familiar flavors while far from home- you want to experience it again, and again. Nectandra’s menu was the perfect combination of traditional, familiar ingredients and adventurous new flavour combinations. It tempted us to try unknown elements fixed in Monteverde culture mixed with the well-known and loved ingredients, and it won us over completely.

We left that night excited to return and to try new combinations because we trust that the people who have put so much thought and creativity into creating those dishes know exactly what they’re doing. We will certainly go back, and even my ‘tried and true’ husband is already thinking about trying something new.

If you get the chance to dine at Nectandra in the Ocotea Boutique Hotel- take it. You won’t be disappointed.
