Monteverde Recognized as Global Finalist for Sustainable Community Development
We’re thrilled to share today that Monteverde has been selected as one of four Costa Rican communities considered finalists in the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) One Planet City Challenge.
On this blog, we’ve extensively discussed the culture of sustainability in Monteverde, ranging from the community’s founding to the present day, including the social and ecological efforts of organizations like the Monteverde Community Fund.
We’ve also discussed how local efforts like those at the Ocotea Boutique Hotel draw from Costa Rica’s culture of ecotourism, so it’s a joy to share similar efforts happening around our community of Monteverde as well as around Costa Rica.
Monteverde Ranked in the Top 25
The news, first reported by sustainability and conservation observer Ojo Al Clima, serves as a reminder that the global climate movement isn’t dependent simply on big cities and metropolitan areas with massive budgets, but is also being led by resourceful, innovative communities like Monteverde.
“Monteverde has been recognized for its robust climate action plan that includes water management, sustainable agriculture, reforestation, reuse and promotion of electric transport. The canton is also working on creating accessible public spaces and environmental sanitation.
The environmental efforts of this municipality have yielded positive results, leading to the development of numerous projects. One of them is “La Tilichera”, a barter centre that promotes the reuse of objects and “Reutilichar”, an initiative to give a second life to unused objects.”
We encourage you to read the full article, available here, and we salute our fellow Costa Rican communities that were also recognized as finalists, including Belén, Santa Ana, and Montes de Oca.
