With global warming and the gradual extinction of many important species- a place like Monteverde with its abundant wildlife and life-giving (ie- oxygen-producing) rainforests becomes an important global resource, both in terms of the flora and fauna itself, but also in knowledge and research.

The UK’s Sunday Times Features Costa Rica With an Emphasis on Monteverde

The Times Travel section shared their Costa Rican Travel Guide on July 12, 2023, with writer Lucy Perrin claiming to have been “infected by Pura Vida”.

We can’t really blame her and we are both excited and thankful for her glowing praise of our mountain home which she notes is the most child-friendly of the National Parks (Monteverde Cloud Forest). The Selvatura Park in particular has lots of family-friendly activities.

Educating Children From Around the Globe

It’s no secret that ongoing research in the fields of conservation, sustainability, biology, reforestation, and many more areas is a direct result of the revenue provided by our tourism industry but it’s not as widely known, perhaps, that this research is being done alongside educational programs and study abroad organizations, and that the knowledge and experience gained by these studies is spreading around the world through our young people.

Organizations like Life Monteverde which works in collaboration with Planeterra, Volunteer World, and UVolunteer all understand the importance of what Monteverde and her forests can share with the scientific community. They know that by educating our youth in the basics of conservation and sustainable practices, we can change the world.

It’s Not All About Tourism

It’s true that the tourism industry is a large part of Costa Rica’s economic strength but that’s not the only thing going on in our little part of the world. We have made a name for ourselves in other industries too- like medical research and development.

We also lead the way in research on a variety of globally-impactful topics like biodiversity, marine biology, the interconnectivity of nature, longevity, sustainability, and green energy.

A little further west, along the Pacific Coast, there are always various studies taking place that pertain to Nicoya’s Blue Zone, finding eco-friendly methods of cleaning our oceans and replenishing the ocean’s depleted levels of coral and new alternatives for single-use plastics.

And it is this type of forward-thinking ingenuity and creativity that will continue to put us on the world’s stage for years to come.

If you would like to come and explore Monteverde and all that it has to offer, we hope that you will consider the Ocotea Boutique Hotel as your home away from home in the mountains. We pride ourselves on personal service and in-depth knowledge of all things Monteverde.
