A different version of love blooms in the mist – one born of lingering moments, shared experiences, and enough time to stop and enjoy the birdsong.
Every year at Ocotea Boutique Hotel begins the same way: with gratitude, with reflection, and with the quiet excitement that comes from imagining what we can become. Monteverde is never static, and neither are we. The forest shifts with the seasons. Ideas evolve. Spaces refine themselves. And through it all, the heart of Ocotea Boutique Hotel – Karen and Valeria, our mother-daughter owners – continues to reside in a love for hospitality, nature, and community.
When the first chill of winter settles in up north – when gray skies hang low and daylight slips away too soon – Monteverde truly begins to feel like another world entirely. Here, November marks a quiet transformation at Ocotea Boutique Hotel.
At Ocotea Boutique Hotel, every detail is designed to honor Monteverde’s forests, culture, and community. As a family-run Monteverde boutique hotel, we’ve always seen ourselves as caretakers of both our land and our community.
At first glance, Ocotea Boutique Hotel appears to be a quiet Monteverde retreat—and it is, with 21 boutique rooms tucked into a peaceful corner near Santa Elena. But step inside, and it becomes clear: this is more than a Monteverde boutique hotel. It’s a living example of what happens when sustainability is paramount and community and hospitality are woven into every detail.
When Colin arrived at Ocotea Boutique Hotel, it wasn’t his first time to Monteverde. He had stayed in the area before, but as he later shared, something here felt different. "From before you arrive until you leave, you can tell the team legitimately cares about sharing Monteverde with you," he wrote.
In Monteverde, our stories don’t just belong to the past. They live on in the roots of the forest, in a traditional meal, in the way we greet you with genuine warmth. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, they live in the places you stay and the people you meet.
Monteverde’s winding roads, dramatic elevations, and commitment to sustainability are part of what makes this region unforgettable. But for travelers looking to reduce their environmental impact as they get to the area, those same mountain climbs can present a unique challenge. Fortunately, Costa Rica is leading the way in building a reliable, country-wide electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure that supports conscious tourism from the ocean to the cloud forest. Ocotea Boutique Hotel is happy to be a part of this.
